
Introduction
In a bid to foster global collaboration on urgent development challenges, a United Nations agency recently hosted a dynamic virtual workshop series, uniting experts, researchers, and policymakers from diverse regions to exchange ideas, tackle complex issues, and drive impactful solutions together.
These online events were designed to foster knowledge exchange and practical dialogue across borders and languages. To ensure full linguistic accessibility, the agency partnered with Language Solutions to provide simultaneous interpretation in English-Albanian, Serbian-Albanian, and Macedonian-Albanian languages, along with the technical infrastructure and live event management necessary to deliver the series seamlessly in a digital format.
Designing a Multilingual Online Experience
The workshop series consisted of multiple sessions held via Zoom, with participants logging in from various time zones and working environments. One of the main requirements was to allow all attendees to listen and engage in the language they were most comfortable with. Language Solutions handled the setup of the tailored Zoom setup for interpretation, configuring language channels for each of the three required working languages. This setup allowed participants to select their preferred audio channel with ease throughout the event.
Our team coordinated with the organizers in advance to understand the session structure, speaker lineup, and participant flow. Based on this information, we prepared a schedule that ensured language coverage throughout, while also building in flexibility to accommodate time-sensitive changes during the series. We also managed rehearsal sessions with keynote speakers and moderators to familiarize them with the technical features and to optimize coordination during the live events, including coordinating relay, real-time interpretation, and ensuring seamless online communication.
Professional Interpreting and Technical Management
Each session of the series was supported by teams of experienced interpreters matched to the content and context, chosen for their fluency in the relevant languages and their expertise in the thematic content covered. The interpreters worked remotely through the Zoom interpretation feature, delivering real-time translation across the three languages without interruption. Their work enabled all participants to contribute fully, regardless of their linguistic background.
In addition to language delivery, our technical team monitored every session live, providing live technical support and orientation for both participants and panelists. This included troubleshooting any audio issues, assisting users with interpretation channel access, managing breakout rooms when needed, and ensuring the transitions between sessions ran smoothly. Our approach combined linguistic expertise with digital event coordination, allowing the UN agency to focus on content while we handled the operational delivery.
Outcome and Feedback
The workshop series was successfully concluded with strong participation and a high degree of engagement from attendees. The ability to access content in three different languages significantly improved the reach and inclusivity of the discussions.
