Introduction to the Technical Training Program
Language Solutions Albania was proud to support the International Organization for Migration (IOM) by providing professional interpreting services during the Collaborative Response to Migration Management training sessions held in Korça (3-4 December 2024) and Gjirokastra (5-6 December 2024). These training sessions aimed to strengthen the capacity of mobile teams and NGO service providers in managing migration challenges and supporting migrants effectively.
Simultaneous Interpretation for a Diverse Audience
Our team played a pivotal role in ensuring effective communication throughout the training by providing simultaneous interpreting services from English into Albanian and vice versa. The training featured in-depth discussions on migration management, which often involved the use of technical jargon and specialized terminology. Given the complexity of these subjects, our interpreters were specifically chosen for their ability to handle not only general migration-related topics but also intricate, field-specific vocabulary and concepts. This expertise was essential in maintaining the accuracy and clarity of communication, allowing local participants to engage with international experts without linguistic barriers. By providing real-time interpretation, we ensured that the training sessions proceeded smoothly and that all participants, regardless of their language, were able to follow along and contribute to the discussions effectively.
The training was designed with interactive group activities that further enhanced the complexity even for the interpretation. Participants were divided into smaller working groups, where in-depth discussions and case studies took place, requiring the interpreters to switch between consecutive and simultaneous interpretation modes. The dynamic nature of these smaller group sessions meant that the interpreters had to be even more adaptable, as they were translating technical terms and facilitating communication in a more conversational setting. The continuous demand for accuracy and clarity across various group dynamics significantly increased the intensity of the interpreters’ work, ensuring that each group’s discussion flowed seamlessly and that all participants, whether speaking Albanian or English, could contribute meaningfully to the collective learning experience.
Specialized Expertise in AVRR Complex Subject Matter
The subject matter of the training required interpreters with a specialized understanding of migration, humanitarian aid, and technical terminology including Assisted Voluntary Return and Reintegration (AVRR) programme. Our interpreters were selected not only for their linguistic skills but also for their in-depth knowledge of global migration issues and their ability to navigate the complex terminology associated with migration management, policy development, and humanitarian support. The ability to convey highly specialized concepts, such as asylum procedures, human trafficking, and refugee protection, required interpreters who were not only fluent in both languages but also highly trained in the field. They dedicated considerable time to studying the specific topics that would be covered and reviewed materials related to asylum procedures, human trafficking, refugee protection, etc. familiarizing themselves with the latest policies and frameworks. By ensuring that our interpreters had both linguistic and subject-matter expertise, we helped guarantee that the discussions were meaningful and that participants could engage fully with the content.
Tailored Logistics and Coordination
The logistical planning and coordination for the interpreters was another crucial element of the project’s success. Language Solutions Albania managed the comprehensive logistics, including the organization of travel, accommodation, and transportation for our team of interpreters. While some interpreters were brought in from Tirana to ensure a diverse range of expertise, we also worked with highly skilled local interpreters. This local involvement allowed us to ensure that the interpretation was culturally sensitive and contextually accurate, which was particularly important in discussions about regional migration challenges. Our ability to blend local knowledge with external expertise played an integral part in ensuring that every session was delivered cohesively, while also respecting regional nuances.
Insights and Key Takeaways for Interpreters
The experience offered valuable insights and key takeaways for the interpreters involved. One significant takeaway was the importance of continuous preparation and specialized knowledge in complex subject areas. Another key takeaway was the importance of flexibility and adaptability. Interpreting in dynamic environments, such as group discussions or case studies, requires the ability to quickly switch between simultaneous and consecutive interpreting, while also being able to adjust to different communication styles and group dynamics. This experience underscored the value of stress management, as interpreters had to stay focused and alert throughout the training to maintain the accuracy of their work.
