Supporting Multilingual Events
International study visits are among the most demanding multilingual events to support. Unlike traditional conferences held in a single venue, they combine institutional meetings, field visits, travel between locations, and continuous interaction between participants from different linguistic backgrounds.
Language Solutions Albania recently had the opportunity to support an international study visit organised by UN Women Moldova in cooperation with UN Women Albania, focused on gender mainstreaming, gender-responsive budgeting, and inclusive local governance practices in Albania. Over the course of three days, participants engaged in a full-day training workshop held in Tirana, visited institutions and municipalities in Elbasan and Durrës, engaging with public officials, local stakeholders, and community representatives.
Ensuring Effective English-Albanian Communication
The language combination throughout the programme was English-Albanian-Romanian. Discussions covered public policy, local governance, budgeting mechanisms, and gender equality initiatives, requiring interpreters with both linguistic expertise and a solid understanding of institutional terminology.
In such settings, interpretation plays a crucial role in facilitating meaningful dialogue. Participants must be able not only to understand presentations but also to actively contribute to discussions, ask questions, and exchange experiences with confidence.
Managing Multilingual Communication Through Relay Interpreting
One of the more technically demanding aspects of the assignment involved facilitating English-Albanian communication through relay interpreting, as the majority of discussions and presentations were conducted in Romanian. As is often the case in international programmes, relay interpreting was used to bridge language combinations that were not available directly.
Relay interpretation requires a high degree of concentration and coordination between interpreters, as information is transmitted through an intermediary language channel before reaching the final audience. While largely invisible to participants, it is one of the most demanding forms of conference interpreting and requires both experienced linguists and reliable technical support.
The Role of Mobile Interpretation Technology
Because the programme included field visits and travel between multiple locations, traditional conference interpretation equipment was not always the most suitable solution.
Mobile audio systems, such as Infoport, allowed participants to receive interpretation clearly while moving between venues and during on-site visits. These systems are particularly valuable for study visits, technical missions, and institutional exchanges where participants are frequently on the move.
Although compact and user-friendly, mobile interpretation systems require careful planning, equipment management, and technical oversight to ensure uninterrupted communication throughout the event.

For this study visit, our team combined English-Albanian interpretation, and mobile interpretation technology to create an environment where language was never a barrier to participation. This allowed participants to focus entirely on the exchange of knowledge and best practices while communication flowed naturally across languages and locations.
